Passing along for probable interest to RPi enthusiasts.
This isn't a magic bottleneck remover: It's just a USB 3.1 to M.2
converter, so you're still stuck with USB. Also, your $25 doesn't
bag an NVMe drive; you'll need to provide that separately. Also, still
no booting from such a device (because no booting from USB).
USB boot is on the roadmap, though. The RasPi foundation prioritized
network booting and that has been available for a while now.
From 2019-09-23:
It is possible to place most of the OS on the USB drive but have a small bootcode
file on the SD card.
NVMe to USB 3.1 are not new. I have this one
LUG meeting. (So far no one has had trouble with such a drive, and it hasn't
been used yet.)
In that
rasberrypi.org forum post the OP mentions the drive getting very hot. The
news here is a new NVMe to USB 3.1 bridge chip made by Realtek. From the
reports it runs a lot cooler.

Still, could be rather nice, and a significant advance.
