Request for advice/direction

Hello:

It's been a while since any correspondence has taken place on this list.  I hope I will be forgiven for breaking this hiatus, to ask at least one question here.

I have recently been trying to divest myself of MacOS, after 2 years of experimentation.  I will try to avoid discussion of why I wanted to do this.  Problems for me were a few; but the most glaring one was a clash between the case-sensitivity of GNU/Linux and the default case-insensitivity of MacOS., leading to issues that were never resolved, even though the MacOS filesystem for user files was set up as case-sensitive at some point.  Damage had been done; perhaps some would be interested to know that my Capture Templates of Org-mode on Emacs had made heavy use of the distinction between Upper and Lower case commands, and that my working Dropbox directory, of many years standing, had made use of files with meaningful Upper and Lower case distinctions.  Dropbox, by sharing between the GNU/Linux system and the MacOS system manged to pollute the structure of my working setup, a result that has left scars even after two years.

I think I need to have use of either windoze or MacOS for mainly one program: Helicon Focus, a tool that enables easy focus stacking of images.  Although I am experimenting this week with a workflow using Fiji/ImageJ, I have come to rely upon Helicon Focus.

Therefore, I think I need to install Windoze on my desktop machine.  Dual booting is possible; however Window$, if installed after a GNU/Linux system, seems to piratically take over the boot record.  So, for me, I believe a virtual machine will be ideal.

I have abandoned the Macbook Pro with it's flashy apple silicone, in favor of my "legacy" Thinkpad S1 Yoga.  Even with limited RAM I was able to install VirtualBox running Window$ 10, and actually start up Helicon Focus; however, the limited RAM as well as somewhat slow nature of even the i7 machinery made it an uncomfortable ride.

Decisions are needing to be made, therefore.  The Desktop machine is ideal, and, for now, it would be possible to work with Helicon Focus on a virtual machine.  Issues, however, include the limited graphics real estate (low resolution) of Virtual Box, at least as initially installed.

During my last meeting, I learned of the existence of virtlib, with apparently better specs than Virtual Box.

So the current need is to either expand the virtual box window on the Desktop's higher resolution display, or try the more sophisticated libvert.  For this reason, and because making it to even jitsi meetings on Sundays is problematical, I am posting on this list, the following questions, and a request for advice:
  1. Is virtual box good enough for my somewhat older hardware on a VM?
  2. Is it worth the probable struggle to install libvert with another VM?  Indeed, given my middling skills, is it doable?
  3. I would appreciate any pointers to useful information.
I hope to attend a meeting soon of the BLUG.
