I do stuff like that all the time.  I believe that it *should* be
idiomatic.  Perl started out as a replacement for Bourne shell, and
its original idiom was suitable for that purpose.  But Perl's role in
the world has evolved, and its idiom needs to evolve to match this new
role.

Perl has closures and higher-order functions, and I think Perl
programmers need to understand how to use them.
