[PhillyOnRails] Compiling v. Darwin Ports

Anybody have any wise words of wisdom on whether to use darwin ports
v. compiling packages yourself to set up a RoR environment on a mac?
I've done it both ways, I think I like compiling it myself but. Is the
end result pretty much the same thing??
