Is it worth knowing what folks are using now, to compare ruby's strengths and weaknesses against it?

You shouldn't need much more!

Ruby does have some performance implications that are not encountered by
most, but could be a problem depending on your application. Be ready to
counter any attacks with statistics on how cheap servers are vs.
developer time, etc.
