I thought the whole point of Gentoo was just a glorified LFS with a rip of the FreeBSD ports system? So if ls didn't have color set by default it was the builders fault. Colors are everywhere in gentoo right out of the gate. ls, grep, bootup, emerge (ports clone). Everywhere. It's a ridiculously rich CLI before you even do any kind of configuration.

I do however, wish there were some easy way to get a really base system (boot loader, stock kernel, shell and basic utils, sshd) up and running in like 5 minutes then work from there.

But on a VPS that exists in the form of a fresh xen image.

There might be something out there. I just haven't looked too hard.
