It's coming along. The third beta release (5.5.670) came out a couple
days ago.

I think you must have misunderstood, and I just looked at the
announcement and didn't see anything like that.

was the 5.5.650 announcement, if you want to examine it again.

As far as 5.6, there's no date set. Here's the latest word:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Well, now it's past time to get our acts together and make that release
happen. I'll be working for the next couple of days on rounding out
everything we have so far (especially the unicode support) to make a
proper release candidate out of it. So to set up the mood, here's some
context:

The tents began to go up. There was a specially large pavilion,
so big that the tree that grew in the field was right inside it, and
stood proudly near one end, at the head of the chief table. Lanterns
were hung on all its branches. More promising still (to the hobbits'
mind): an enormous open-air kitchen was erected in the north corner
of the field. A draught of cooks, from every inn and eating-house for
miles aournd, arrived to supplement the dwarves and other odd folk
that were quartered at Bag End. Excitement rose to its height.

                                          --A Long-Expected Party
                                            LOTR I, J R R Tolkien

If you don't get any tweaks that you want to be in 5.6 to me by Friday
morning PST, it is probably too late for 5.6. To minimize any patch
conflicts, consider working against the latest repository sources (see
perlhack.pod for how to get it).

That's from

if you want to check it out.
