My college a cappella group recorded tracks for a CD last semester using Protools 6.4 on a mac. I was going to spend the summer mixing them down using Protools 6.4 for windows. All of the tracks I set up myself work fine, but the other guys who were running some of the sessions forgot to check off "Enforce PC/Mac Compatibility)". So I can't access those tracks to work with them until they're re-saved with that box checked on a mac. So now I'm home, far from school at this point (went to school in Maine), and don't know anyone who owns a mac. So I need to find a Mac. Catches: It needs to have Panther (10.3), since 6.4 won't run on Tiger and apparently has issues sharing files with Jaguar. I went to the local mac shop to ask to use one for the afternoon, and they were willing except that all their boxes run Tiger. The local schools and libraries won't let me go installing stuff. Anyone on this list have a mac that they'd be willing to let me get at for an hour or so (give or take) so I can convert these files? Or, alternatively, does anyone have a running ProTools 6.4 setup that would be able to download 5gb or so and re-save these? Will travel, will buy lunch, will do more or less anything that doesn't involve spending ~$100 to upgrade ProTools to the new version that runs on Tiger. Most of the computers are available for use (by students of the department of course ;+) ), and have generally the same software installed across all the disciplines -- which I believe would include ProTools. Of course, you'll probably have more luck finding the software in the Film & Video and Music department, but the Design machines are work a try. The labs are open over many hours, but your social engineering will probably go better in the weekday daytimes when more senior, and probably more compassionate, monitors are in the labs. The people working during the day are very friendly. Being that this will be an ongoing project (probably a few sessions I assume), I suggest talking to someone within that time frame, and getting advice and clearence about other, more friendlier evening or weekend times to come back. These are typically small-ish majors and lab monitors will notice when somebody new is using their expensive new-fangled microwaves. I worked in those labs for work-study early in my time at Drexel -- 4 years ago -- and I can give you advice, directions, and contacts if you'd like to contact me offline. Here is the link to that paper: http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/cond-mat/0402143 While this technique is weak for anti-spam in particular, it may have much better application to social networking problems. As well, here are some information sources on scale-free networks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale-free_network http://www.nd.edu/~networks/ http://www.nd.edu/~networks/linked.htm The last link is few months that I'm now trying to use. The problem is the ethernet port. It is not recognized. The hardware browser finds it, but it doesn't get added into the system. I booted Knoppix, and it worked just fine. after much fooling around, I found that when the modprobe is done, the module can't be found (8139too). However, the 8139too.ko file is in the modules directory. Any Ideas why it can't be found? It is not in the /proc/modules list and insmod gives me a -1 status and doesn't add in the module. I tried a few other modules that are there, but they all come up as module not found. I tried re-installing the system (FC3) but that didn't fix it. I'd rather not do a fresh install if possible. Tonight, I'm burning the FC4 Cd's, and can try upgrading to the FC4 level, but I get the feeling this may not fix it either. a few months ago, I tried to get the USB wireless LAN to function, and I'm wondering if I clobbered something in the process?? I've tried deleteing all the networks and all the hardware and adding in a new eth0 with the appropriate hardware, but when I activate it, I get the module not found error. How do I convince the system I really DO have the modules? or are the .ko files not the actual module? Try this, maybe it will work: ls -l /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.ko. If the file is there, and everything seems ok (not 0 size, not symlink etc), then the module is there and the kernel should find it. Try running 'depmod -a', and then try modprobing 8139too again. If it doesn't work, maybe we can fingure out something else. Also what you might want to check (although I doubt it) is the permissions. After getting the output of ls -l above, and the persmission on the file are 644, try: cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/ ls -ld . cd ../ ls -ld . cd ../ ... Until you reach the top level. But since all those directories are created by the kernel install (or RH), that shouldn't be a problem. - -Cos - -- GPG key fingerprint = DE9F 4664 E666 2BD1 903E 4F4D EA31 5FB1 C7F9 08C1 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFC83uN6jFfscf5CMERAsiBAJ90in1/pGeAvj7ogdhZ5JVU6M8WHACgskjC 8BEGTCksngb8U81G57aVtCk= =8TKa -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug From plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org Fri Aug 05 15:07:31 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: historian@netisland.net Received: (qmail 2809 invoked from network); 5 Aug 2005 15:07:31 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ellesmere.netisland.net) (127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 5 Aug 2005 15:07:31 -0000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: alias-plug@lists.phillylinux.org Received: (qmail 2799 invoked by uid 107); 5 Aug 2005 15:07:28 -0000 Received: from [66.33.193.58] (HELO toby.dreamhost.com) (66.33.193.58) by mail.netisland.net (qpsmtpd/0.28) with ESMTP; Fri, 05 Aug 2005 11:07:28 -0400 Received: from localhost (dsl092-177-242.phl1.dsl.speakeasy.net [66.92.177.242]) by toby.dreamhost.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id D375212DA11 for ; Fri, 5 Aug 2005 08:06:54 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2005 11:06:53 -0400 From: Toby DiPasquale To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org Message-ID: <20050805150653.GA250@aluminum.eprivacy.int> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Subject: [PLUG] disable plugin-based popups in Firefox X-BeenThere: plug@lists.phillylinux.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Philadelphia Linux User's Group Discussion List List-Id: Philadelphia Linux User's Group Discussion List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org Errors-To: plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org I almost forgot... Since it's FC3 it probably has iptables (I haven't played much with FC), so you can try iptables -L You can also do a traceroute and see how the packet travels. Also, you might want to check SELinux, since I've seen people have weird problems that turned out to be SEL related. - -Cos - -- GPG key fingerprint = DE9F 4664 E666 2BD1 903E 4F4D EA31 5FB1 C7F9 08C1 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFC86gJ6jFfscf5CMERApBcAKCd0tsa8fwy61aiBbfxVxXWYSyfSwCfQ2+/ tEVYyxN9vuqQd1nH0j5NCSc= =Sih5 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug From plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org Sun Aug 07 17:42:11 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: historian@netisland.net Received: (qmail 17407 invoked from network); 7 Aug 2005 17:42:11 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ellesmere.netisland.net) (127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 7 Aug 2005 17:42:11 -0000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: alias-plug@lists.phillylinux.org Received: (qmail 17395 invoked by uid 107); 7 Aug 2005 17:42:08 -0000 Received: from [216.158.45.183] (HELO astra.purple.com) (216.158.45.183) by mail.netisland.net (qpsmtpd/0.28) with ESMTP; Sun, 07 Aug 2005 13:42:08 -0400 Received: from jeff by astra.purple.com with local (Exim 4.50) id 1E1p9T-0001DS-7D for plug@lists.phillylinux.org; Sun, 07 Aug 2005 13:41:35 -0400 Date: Sun, 7 Aug 2005 13:41:35 -0400 From: Jeff Abrahamson To: PLUG Message-ID: <20050807174135.GA4468@purple.com> Mail-Followup-To: PLUG Mime-Version: 1.0 User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i Subject: [PLUG] kernel and bios and pnp X-BeenThere: plug@lists.phillylinux.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Philadelphia Linux User's Group Discussion List List-Id: Philadelphia Linux User's Group Discussion List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="===============2077127833==" Mime-version: 1.0 Sender: plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org Errors-To: plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org --===============2077127833== Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="6TrnltStXW4iwmi0" Content-Disposition: inline --6TrnltStXW4iwmi0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-15 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Here's a bit of oddness that I don't understand. With the mbox format, I bzip2 all my mails in an archive/ directory. When I want to search my archives I use grepm, a script that calls mutt with grepmail's results. Grepmail is able to decompress the archive and return all the mail that matches the search. Something like: $ grepm foobar archive/2005*.default.mbox I would like to implement a similar scheme using maildir, only it makes sense (I think) to use tar.bz2 here. I ran a quick test that failed: $ grepm cera Maildir.tar.bz2 grepmail: "Maildir.tar.bz2" is not a mailbox, skipping No matches. I could re-convert back to mbox for archives, and leave my system as-is (hoping such a script already exists). I'm not sure what advantages I get by storing the archives in maildir ... since I think most advantages seem to occur in production, not offline. Does anyone have experience with maildir and searching stored archives? I got an Asus K8N-E for use with an Athlon64 CPU. It has hardward SATA RAID controllers, built-in USB 2.0 and Firewire, onboard Gigabit Ethernet NIC, some NVIDIA video card (I don't use it). The only thing it doesn't have that you mentioned is PCI-X. It was pretty cheap, too... on special at newegg.com for something less than $70. In addition, the K8N4-E has all of the above, plus one PCI-X slot. Its $104 on newegg.com as of the time of this email.
