But I think the big problem that you encountered is that your boot loader is looking for a newer kernel. This newer kernel was overwritten, or has had it's world changed enough so that it can't boot. I'd try booting from a cd to a shell, mounting the system up and installing the boot loader on to the MBR with the correct configuration. The directions to do this will differ depending on the boot loader. The two most common loaders are grub and lilo. You should be able to tell based on the boot loader prompt. I'll look around/ ask around to see if I can track down 7.2 isos. If I'm able I'll try to make them available for you. Good luck. You might take a look at this: http://www.aaisp.co.uk/aa/firebrick/ http://www.firebrick.co.uk/ I haven't used it, but aaisp.net was my ISP when I lived in London and they were very clueful, so I would guess their firewall appliance is pretty good, and it fits within your budget. It's small, so shipping wouldn't be a major cost, and you'd pay the ex-VAT price. The site is contribs.org. The current incarnation 7.0 is based on CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise clone). I have several 6.x boxes running for long times without problem and my experiments with the 7.0 series is favorable as well. MS users see the samba shares, printers, etc so it acts as a file/print server as well as a firewall. It has VPN capability as well. Set up is relatively painless and it has a web administrative interface that masks much of the detail. You just need a vanilla PC with two NIC interfaces. Good luck. Since I have Mac OSX I am foreseeing that trying to get my PPPoE account with their icky software will be impossible. Even if it is possible, I don't want to use it. All I need is to get a username/password to use with my Airport PPPoE setup. Is their an alternative way of doing this that does not involve calling them? I googled it and found that there is a web-site that could be used to do this (https://dslreg.verizon.net). However, all the postings about it where pretty old, and Verizon does not have any mention of this site on their documentation. Anyone knows if this will work? Internal software will be running on MS Windows. Office will need a firewall, and the ability to VPN in. Concerned about security do to HIPPA. Simple, buy a PIX firewall. Home users can use the PIX VPN client. Done. Depending on your load, either get a PIX-501, 506, or spring for a 515 or 515E. The restricted license is probably more then enough. You can pick up a 515 Restricted for well under $1000. A 501 goes for about $350, but cant really support alot of VPN connections. What are you using for bandwidth? DSL or T1 with data and voip? Reason I ask, if you go with a T1 and use it for both internat data and voice/voip, alot of providers will throw in firewall and VPN through managed MPLS at the end of the circuit. Data/VoIP T1's are going for as little as $450. If they make alot of long distance calls, it easily pays for itself, especially if they were going to use a traditional PBX. -John On Tue, 1 Aug 2006, Carl Husa wrote: > > Two separate questions. > > 1. Separately, I'm trying to get "dig,(BIND 9.3.2 " the alternative to nslookup, to run on an XP box. Followed the excellent instructions at http://pigtail.net/LRP/dig/, but keep getting an error message that a nameserver cannot be found. The corresponding nslookup command works just fine. Hodwy All,

I decided to put my modem connection out to pasture and signed up
with Verizon for their cheap $15 DSL service. Since I have Mac OSX I
am foreseeing that trying to get my PPPoE account with their icky
software will be impossible. Even if it is possible, I don't want to
use it. All I need is to get a username/password to use with my
Airport PPPoE setup.

Is their an alternative way of doing this that does not involve
calling them? I googled it and found that there is a web-site that
could be used to do this (https://dslreg.verizon.net). However, all
the postings about it where pretty old, and Verizon does not have any
mention of this site on their documentation. Anyone knows if this
will work?

TIA,

Two separate questions.

1.  I have been asked to set up system in a physician's office - a small start up solo practice, with tight resources.  The medical practice software has already been selected, and will run on MS Windows.  Givent hat users will be accessing the site remotely through teh internet, and the importance of HIPAA and private health information, I want to set up a firewall appliance.  I've looked at Sonicwall and Trustix, butwould like more options if available.  I'd like opinions on appropriate devices for an appliance budget of around $1000, and on recommendations you might have on application firewalls that might be appropriate for the small office.  Of course, I'm looking at running Linux.  Additionally, any opinions on what other "stuff" I might want to be looking for would be a great help.

2.  Separately, I'm trying to get "dig,(BIND 9.3.2 " the alternative to nslookup, to run on an XP box.  Followed the excellent instructions at http://pigtail.net/LRP/dig/ , but keep getting an error message that a nameserver cannot be found.  The corresponding nslookup command works just fine.  Does the resolv.conf file have a special format for dig?

Thanks

Carl
