You may recall I was tinkering around with various cameras and such. Well I managed to get my hands on a few (3 to be exact) Quickcam Express cameras. THere is a quickcam driver (QC-USB) and that works great. The original configuration I had was FC5 with 2 of the cameras. Everything worked great. The moment I plugged a 3rd camera in one of the first 2 stopped working (it always seems to be /dev/video1). Any attempts to use that camera hang the process calling the driver to the point where I can't even rmmod the quickcam driver. I kill the processes opening the driver, but the driver still has references to it. The only way to clear it up appears to be to reboot. So it appears there is a 2 camera limit somewhere (intentional or not). Does anyone have any insights as to whether this is a kernel limitation or a driver limitation? I don't have any other cameras that really work with Linux (I don't think... this brings up some interesting questions actually about which cameras I have work... but that's tinkering for another day). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the insight, Marc ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug From plug-bounces@lists.phillylinux.org Tue May 01 16:15:14 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: historian@netisland.net Received: (qmail 14609 invoked from network); 1 May 2007 16:15:14 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ellesmere.netisland.net) (127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 1 May 2007 16:15:14 -0000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: alias-plug@lists.phillylinux.org Received: (qmail 14574 invoked by uid 107); 1 May 2007 16:15:10 -0000 Received: from email2.gra-inc.com (HELO gra-inc.com) (67.62.29.206) by qpsmtpd.netisland.net (qpsmtpd/0.32) with ESMTP; Tue, 01 May 2007 12:15:10 -0400 Received: from [192.168.0.47] by gra-inc.com (MDaemon PRO v9.5.6) with ESMTP id 57-md50000074203.msg for ; Tue, 01 May 2007 12:14:52 -0400 Message-ID: <46376779.3080001@gra-inc.com> Date: Tue, 01 May 2007 12:14:49 -0400 From: Greg Helledy User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 (Windows/20070221) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org References: <46362F3700037FCF@malone.intellispace.net> (added by postmaster@intellispace.net) In-Reply-To: <46362F3700037FCF@malone.intellispace.net> (added by postmaster@intellispace.net) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Authenticated-Sender: gregsonh@gra-inc.com X-Spam-Processed: gra-inc.com, Tue, 01 May 2007 12:14:52 -0400 (not processed: message from valid local sender) X-Return-Path: gregsonh@gra-inc.com X-Envelope-From: gregsonh@gra-inc.com X-MDaemon-Deliver-To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org X-MDAV-Processed: gra-inc.com, Tue, 01 May 2007 12:14:52 -0400 Subject: [PLUG] V4L Maximum video devices? The issue isn't how many cameras the drivers support, it's how many it supports at one time. I actually found my answer. I usually start the programs from xwindows on the file server, but I tried doing it with VNC this time so I could still have access to the console on the physical machine (since the issue I'm seeing tends to hang the GUI). Once I did that I got a clear indicator on the console that something else was the problem.. I got a nice juicy kernel fault (included below if anyone is curious). A quick lookup of the kernel message (Unable to handle kernel paging request...) returned the following page: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_logitech_quickcam_on_2.6.x_kernel And about 3/4 down the page is the information I was looking for: "If you only see a blackscreen using xawtv or gqcam and then the application crashes and the kernel log gives you something like this: May 18 14:47:37 [kernel] ohci_hcd 0000:00:03.1: leak ed ef3340c0 (#81) state 2 May 18 14:48:00 [kernel] quickcam: Control URB error -2 May 18 14:48:00 [kernel] Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 02000040 ... May 18 14:48:00 [kernel] <1>Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! you have to make sure the webcam is connected to a usb-hub (BUS) that does not have any other devices attached to it. " So basically, the rule of thumb is webcams must be the only USB device on a given root hub or else things go south. Since I ended up with 2 cameras in one hub, the minute I opened the 2nd it caused some resource conflict and BOOM... So now I have to find either a USB bracket for my server or a USB expansion card. Are there any cards that DON'T work with linux that I should be aware of? Oh well, thanks for the help. The main workshop will be led by Thomas Miller who writes: "The workshop is about learning to clone the four basic cloning grids that make the volume quanta (Fuller's term) the 'a' module, a-b module, mite and 't' module. We will concentrate on the first three. The grids become self-organizing which needs four abilities: self-stabilization, self-correction, self-regeneration and self-innovation. The overall idea is that these modules have a modular building system inside them and we will explore that system." In addition, there will be artifact exhibit space for participants and a session for participants to discuss their work. They do no= t=20 seem minor. =46irst the system Kubuntu Dapper 6.06.1 LTS Kernel 2.6.15-28-686 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 13 20:55:53 UTC 2007 i686 (this= is=20 a single CPU system) KDE 3.5.5 Problem #1: I've had this problem since upgrading Breezy to Dapper. Hald won't daemoni= ze. =20 Without hal, access to USB peripherals is impossibly slow and samba won't=20 browse, and shares won't mount (w2k has no problem mounting the Linux share= s,=20 but Linux won't mount the win shares.) I got a lot of help trying to=20 diagnose this problem a while back, but no solution. The solution seemed t= o=20 be a clean reinstall. I was putting off the reinstall when all of a sudden, hal started working. = I=20 had no idea what changed to make it work, but it did. All was good. About a week ago, it stopped working again. the reason for the change, onc= e=20 more, eludes me. Yesterday, it started working again. This may be related to problems #2 & = #3. Problem #2 Every once in a while /dev/null gets corrupted and won't work for a regular= =20 user. This causes weird problems, like inability to print and start X. To= =20 fix, I go to tty 3 and remove and remake the device. Then everything works= =20 fine. This happens anywhere from once a day to once every two weeks. I bo= ot=20 from /dev/hda; I assume the block device is stored somewhere on that=20 partition. I have no idea why this is happening. Here is the weird part: If I boot while /dev/null is corrupt, hald daemoni= zes=20 without complaint. Problem #3 This really scared me last night. All of a sudden I couldn't access any=20 subdirectories on the drive/partition where my music is stored. I have abo= ut=20 188 GB and no backup (other than CD-Rs of about 75%, but we're talking=20 hundreds of CD-Rs to re-rip.) This happened while amarok was transferring= =20 music from the partition to my iPod (halfway through loading an 80 MB=20 podcast). Then amarok couldn't find the music, and ls couldn't browse the= =20 sudirectories. Bash completion failed on known subdirectories. Only df=20 confirmed the continued existence of the data. I exited the KDE session, went to a shell prompt and umounted the partition= =20 (/dev/hdf1, IDE/ATA, mounted on /mnt/music -- there is nothing else on this= =20 200 GB disc/partion -- fs is ext3). Umount succeeded, but complained that= =20 there was a "hole in sector 529" in the process. fsck failed to start,=20 complaining of bad sector 0. dmesg output complaind of lots of I/O errors = on=20 the drive. I went to bed. One more thing: Sometimes (about 3x in as many months) when hald is running and power save = is=20 initiated, the computer becomes so unresponsive to a wake up that even the= =20 numlock won't toggle. Only a hard reboot solves things. But... a hard=20 reboot yields a functioning hald and a corrupted but easily fixed /dev/null. When I got up this morning, I found one of those powersave lock-ups. On ha= rd=20 reboot, not only did hald daemonize, and /dev/null initialize with=20 corruption, but /mnt/music mounted without a problem and everything is stil= l=20 there. At this point, I am afraid to access the files or umount the partition. Can this stuff be related? What to do about /dev/hdf1-/mnt/music? Thanks. =2D-=20 _____________________________________________________________ Art Alexion PGP fingerprint: 52A4 B10C AA73 096F A661 92D2 3B65 8EAC ACC5 BA7A Keyserver: hkp://subkeys.pgp.net The attachment - signature.asc - is my electronic signature; no need for=20 alarm. I have a shuttle, a mac mini, and another that has a VIA Nehemiah and is entirely fanless (the shuttle and the mac minis both have fans, but pretty decently quiet ones). They are mostly great, although there are some heat issues from being crammed in a small case. Mac minis also have pretty bad disk I/O, due to having laptop drives. The shuttles have a slightly wonky CPU fan that rattles loose in a year or two and ceases to be as quiet, although it's still not as loud as a normal PC. The shuttle power supplies also tend to blow a little prematurely, due to overheating and the fan bearing seizing (2 for 2 so far). I suggest an external power supply for these sorts of small quiet machines - the mac mini and the VIA both have one, and they show no signs of having issues. > I'm interested in any experiences, anecdotes, or purchase suggestions > to complement my googling. If you're not looking for speed daemons, then they Just Work(TM). I am a big fan of the small and quiet computer (probably because I have a bunch running in my office all the time). --=20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Stephen Gran | The First Rule of Program Optimization: | | steve@lobefin.net | Don't do it. Last year I bought a graphics card that ended up having a pretty noisy fan. I mentioned this to a guy at a computer shop and he said a shot of WD-40 would work wonders. I was skeptical but put a bit right into the "cup" formed by the fan (where it is attached to the motor shaft) and let it work its way in from there. It was an immediate and dramatic improvement. Only now (about 9 months later) is it starting to get noisy again. Greg Helledy -- Privileged/Confidential information may be contained in this message.
