[Plug] ppp problem with rh6.0

I recently upgraded to rh6.0 from rh5.2
On rh5.2, i disconnect by killing pppd. on rh6.0, killing pppd still
disconnects but ifconfig still shows a network interface, ppp0.
next time i connect again, another network interface ppp1 shows up. the
connection is really slow probably because it still thinks ppp0 is still
connected.
I have to do an ifconfig ppp0 down to fix the problem. what is the proper
way to disconnect from a ppp connection?
