Setting the background image is usualy window manager dependant, though you can use some of the X utilities to do it wm independently (xset or xsetroot? it's been a long time). Eterm relies on Esetroot (is that correct?) to detect the background image. This stems from the issue that a trnasparent Eterm isn't really transparent, but it just shows a panning/cropped copy of the background image.
