The best way to learn is to hand edit the config files, read all of the documentation. For instance: Linux Firewalls Read all of the documentation that comes with ipchains and the kernel source documentation on firewalling. Read the man page for ipchains and ipfw_chains Read /usr/doc/HOWTO/Firewall-HOWTO.gz and anything else on firewall configuration. I have found that using an automatic configuration script that allows you to pick options will not teach you very much.
