Check the card too. When I got my cable modem, there was an irq conflict
with the nic card and tvcard. The data light would come on when the nic
card was plugged into the modem, I could ping myself, and the data light
would even blink when I pinged out.
(Unfortunately this was found out by attempting to watch tv in windows
while on hold with @Home :) )

cat /proc/interrupts in Linux to check for any conflicts
In Windows, go into the device manager and do the view where you can see
all the interrupts, cause it will tell you there are no conflicts when you
are looking at devices individually.
