It doesn't have anything to do with the current problem, but I'd recommend using gcc 2.7.2.3 to compile the kernel. Later gccs are known to have problems (or more that the kernel depends on certain idiosyncratic behavior of earlier gccs :) I think gcc 2.95 has a switch to make it kernel friendly as well, but I've never tried it.
