[Plug] Read-only lock on mail file (mutt)

Using the latest Debian package of mutt (released yesterday), I have a
problem with my /var/spool/mail/mpwl file. Mutt marks the file as
read-only, making it impossible to mark messages as read, or delete
them. I've checked the permissions, and the file is owned by mpwl
with rw permissions.

This leads me to assume that there's a lock file somewhere. How do I
delete it?

Also, should I report this as a bug to the mutt package manager and/or
upstream developers?
