How do you figure that I'm off by a power of 2^8th even if I had meant 8.4GB rather than 8.4GiB?

I think your calculation is off by an order of 2^8th

8.4GB = 8.4*1024MB = 8.4*1024*1024k = 8.4*1024*1024*1024bytes (8 bits each)
