Intel's 64-bit chip is the Merced, which supposedly just made first
silicon. It remains to be seen whether they'll actually release it, or
just wait for the second-generation version ("McKinley") developed by
HP.

My guess is your cow orker is thinking about the Monterey project, a
collaboration with IBM, SCO and Sequent. They're developing a new
Unix-like OS combining AIX, UnixWare and Dynix. They'll also port some
parts of AIX to UnixWare to run on IA-32 machines.

Cheers!
