[PLUG] VMware stuff

A PII-300 (oc'd to 300)
G200
UW SCSI
256MB RAM

Runs pretty damn well. I keep my outlook.pst on another machine, and both
win and linux.vmware/win work off of the same pst. works nicely. No
directX, so can't play diablo in it. It is faster if you have an IDE drive
to make a raw disk for the virtual machine's file system, as opposed to the
virtual drive only with a SCSI system. Runs at 2/3 to 3/4 speed for most
everything, mouse is kinda funky in a windowed box. Video isn't that hot.
and you can't update to Xfree 4.0 when it comes out (there is a new video
acceleration that is not backwards compatible to the old version which
Vmware uses extensively) until vmware is updated.

Sound is kinda funky. The SBLive is not fully supported under linux till
the better open source drivers this spring. Therefore there are issues with
vmware passing sounds to /var/snd since it doesn't take the same input.

Love it otherwise.

Hi all,

This sounds like a problem that I have encountered in the past with x
locking up
the local console. I have found that some times Netscape and the
xscreensaver
fills up the swap and memory space thus causing the kernel to start killing
processes. Also I have found that a bad simm or dimm may be the problem.

Several things that I do to check the memory is to run memtest on the system
for
a while. Also I do something crazy like running three kernel compiles
simutaniously in a loop for a while on a new box in three xterms. This will
fill up the memory and stress the cpu. If the box doesn't crash doing this
I
feel fairly safe about the hardware before putting it on line.

With the distro. Look for all the XFree*font*.rpm packages. The other
thing to look for is core files, or messages from syslog. This really
shouldnt be happening. Its not so much "how do I fix the console" so
much as "why is X crashing?". The Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO may have
some answers also. Try reading that. If you installed everything, it'll
be in /usr/doc/HOWTO.

Heyas!

I was wondering if anyone is running VMware and if so what there system
looks like, RAM, processer speed, and even the color of the tower. :) I
can run it fine, just want to know what kind of system will run it good.
Thanks!

I'm running it.
P2 400
256M SDRAM
U2W SCSI
16M TNT vid card
Lots of mp3's.
White case covered in band stickers.
Lots of pr0n.

It runs fine, I've run it on systems with half the specs and it was
acceptable.

Is there any way I can capture the DNS servers negotiated in the PPP
connection and
update resolv.conf with that information? I want it to be automatic, like
Windows.

Is the controller working? (i.e. can you validate it with a DOS-formatted
SCSI
drive?) Can you get back to the old configuration before the HD and RedHat
upgrade? At least you might be able to salvage the data and move it
somewhere
else... --Josh

The only time I've done stuff like that is with pump and dhcp. I never
cared enough to look into it for dialups. Check out the pump software
or the pppd man pages. Beyond that, you may have to write something.
That, and I havent had to setup a dialup in a while now. I forget a
lot of the details.

Well. I only have one scsi drive, so I can't test that.
I do have the 3 gig drive with redhat 6.0 on it, but im not sure if the
latest kernel I used is on there because I was using a different boot
partition at the time... If I can get it back to the original
configuration (or pretty close to it) what the heck would the problem be
if it no longer works? The drive isn't old, it's a replacement of the
original which was totally fubared, so it's been factory refurbished.

I thought specifying papcrypt told pppd to expect the password file to be
encrypted? I'd like to encrypt my password in pap-secrets in case a hacker

Well, your best bet would be to borrow a drive and test it. I mean, I have
some SCSI
drives (not for sale) that I could toast for this sort of test. Don't you
have any
friends with spare parts lying around or anything? You could also try a
different
controller -- Adaptec recommended. On a personal note, I'm not too fond of
refurbished equipment, and I'm not sure I'd trust something as critical as a
hard
drive, but that's just me. Then again, I've had new equipment die on me, so
the key
here, really, is backups. But I never heed my own advice. --Josh
