well, I tried to organize a linux demo day a little while ago, and have all sorts of goodies from linux companies that I can/could use as giveaways, such as stickers, cd's of distros (which are now outdated, cd's of Applix SHELF, a retail version of Applix Office, and some other tidbits. I could probably get some more recent stuff if we wanted to organize one now, but the Linux Demo Day is a national movement that had about 200 lug's participate in the beginning of september. It ended up that my demo day was showing about two dozen neighbors, friends, etc. Linux since I couldn't get much manpower or commercial support, but that could change if PLUG wants to do one. we'd need 5 or 6 computers set up serving different functions, ie. a laptop, a server, a workstation, graphics station, etc. If we got it big, we could get VA to donate some boxes, and probably the same for Penguin Computing to raffle off or something after demoing them. Corel would probably send us a bunch of stuff too, and the various Linux stores would do the same most likely. let me know if we're interested. -----Original Message----- From: plug-admin@lists.nothinbut.net [mailto:plug-admin@lists.nothinbut.net]On Behalf Of Darxus Sent: Sunday, December 05, 1999 8:02 AM To: plug@lists.nothinbut.net Subject: [Plug] install fests / demo days A friend of mine (Loopy) moved to Mississippi. the Linux User Group Of Jackson (www.lugoj.org) has 2 official meetings per month (1st & 3rd thursday), w/ about 25 people attending, and unofficial gatherings at a coffee house the rest of the thursdays. They have about a hundred people on their mailing list (I'd love to know how many are on the plug list to compair). I've been curious about the install fest concept for a while, but I've never seen one, and wasn't sure how well the idea would work. They apparently get 15-30 people bringing in their computers to install linux... that kind of blows my mind. Sounds like they do them about every 3 months. & the last one & next one are at colleges. They also do this "demo days" thing -- where they set up a linux box at barnes & noble, or comp usa, and show linux to people all day. So if we want more people involved, there are definately ways to do it, and other people with experience that can give us like, directions. __________________________________________________________________ PGP fingerprint = 03 5B 9B A0 16 33 91 2F A5 77 BC EE 43 71 98 D4 darxus@op.net / http://www.op.net/~darxus Find the next largest prime, be famous: http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm _______________________________________________ Plug maillist - Plug@lists.nothinbut.net http://lists.nothinbut.net/mail/listinfo/plug _______________________________________________ Plug maillist - Plug@lists.nothinbut.net http://lists.nothinbut.net/mail/listinfo/plug
