I would suggest Python.  You'll probably find it to be a less frustrating
experience.

I'd suggest going with "Learning Python" from O'Reilly.  I would also
suggest "Python Essential Reference" from New Riders.  If you like to
learn by example, take a look at "Python Annotated Archives" from Osborne.
