Use an MUA like mutt instead. It can be completely controlled at the
command-line, so you can embed it in scripts and such.

I see you use pine. Perhaps Pine also has adequate command-line control.

This is mail. You can't very well assume that the recipient's MUA will
do much of anything for you except display text. That said, if you're
mailing to a tech person, it will probably be read fixed width. If
you're mailing to a non-tech person, not only can you not control
display font, but the user probably won't know how to change it for
you.
