here's what I got in regards to what the volunteers (all 15,000 of them) will be taking around, in case you use mass transit and want to know what to avoid. JW ----- Forwarded message from RNCVOL2 <RNCVOL2@republicanconvention.org> ----- Delivered-To: jackw@slinky.jounce.net Delivered-To: jackw@jounce.net From: RNCVOL2 <RNCVOL2@republicanconvention.org> To: "'ferrara1@clam.rutgers.edu'" <ferrara1@clam.rutgers.edu> Subject: SEPTA TRANSPORTATION FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 15:32:57 -0400 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) Subject: SEPTA Transportation To All Volunteers: As you know, we are expecting large crowds of folks to be moving around Philadelphia and surrounding counties during the Convention. To make your commute to your work station as simple as possible, you will find that SEPTA is going to be your fastest link whether you live in the City, one of the four suburbs, New Jersey, or Delaware. Because of this, we are suggesting that volunteers take advantage of the special discount passes and added service that SEPTA will be offering from now until August 5. Getting to First Union Center The best way to reach the First Union Center is on the Broad Street Line Subway (often referred to as the Orange Line). The Broad Street Line connects conveniently with the Market-Frankford Line Subway (transfer free at 15th Street Station); all Regional Rail train lines (transfer at Suburban Station); all Subway-Surface Trolley Lines (transfer at City Hall Station); and several bus lines. Getting to Pennsylvania Convention Center There are many options to reach the Pennsylvania Convention Center for PoliticalFest as well. On Regional Rail, all suburban commuter trains converge at Market East Station. The Center is adjacent to the Station. The Market-Frankford Line serves the center directly at 11th Street. Those using the Broad Street Line should exit at City Hall Station and transfer free to the Market-Frankford Line, exiting that at 11th Street Station. Also serving the Center are several bus routes, all Subway-Surface trolley routes, and PHLASH. In most cases, signs along the way will point you in the right direction. Extended Hours and Extra After Midnight Service To accommodate your ride home after the close of late-night sessions, SEPTA is providing extra after-midnight service on the Broad Street Line. Service lines are being timed by SEPTA for those then transferring to another mode of transit. On Regional Rail, certain routes will add cars, and extra late-night trains will be timed to accommodate you. The Market-Frankford Line and Subway-Surface also will add late night-service. If you live in Center City, the PHLASH shuttle bus will extend its ending hours until 2 a.m. Park at SEPTA Stations In terms of parking, there will be none at the First Union Spectrum lot at Veterans Stadium. Regional Rail riders should take advantage of ample parking space available for free at all stations on the weekend, and for 50 cents a day at the following regional rail stations on weekdays: * R5 Lansdale-Doylestown - Ambler; Colmar; Lansdale; North Hills * R5 Paoli-Thorndale - Whitford; Thorndale * R7 Trenton - Bristol; Cornwells Heights; Levittown The regular cost to park is 50 cents weekdays and free on weekends. Two Special Discount Passes Are Available $25 Nine-Day GOP Convention Pass: unlimited transportation anywhere on SEPTA and PHLASH (valid July 28-August 5). $7 One-Day Pass allowing riders to travel anywhere on SEPTA and PHLASH (rate is valid from July 26-August 5). These can be purchased at Market Street East, Suburban Station, 3oth Street Station and at the Volunteer Trainings going on at Hall D in the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Thursday evening July 27 and Friday afternoon July 28. Paratransit Services Volunteers with disabilities are asked to call SEPTA's Paratransit Department (called CCT Connect) at 215-580-7145. www.septa.org <http://www.septa.org/>. Your best source of information is the SEPTA website at www.septa.org <http://www.septa.org/>. Click on RNC Transit Information for details. You may also call the SEPTA Travel Information Center at 215-580-7800. Should you need assistance once en route, look for SEPTA "Ambassadors" wearing special red shirts and hats throughout the system. Thank you for volunteering. Your participation will make this historical Convention a true success. Mary Ann T.
