[PLUG] redhat v7.o, cd-recorders, and you!

alright. my first post, and this problem is giving me much mental grief, as
well as being a massive pain in my a$$.
here's the situation:

distro: redhat v7.o (believe me, its almost as bad as you think it is)
kernel: 2.2.17 (with ide-scsi support compiled in)
cdroms: hdb = 6x DVD-ROM Reader
	 hdc = 4x CD-Writer (Matsushita)

problem =

i can burn a cd fine with my cd-recorder, but i cannot mount any cdroms. no
dice. no nothing.
here is a sample from my dmesg output >>>

PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hda: Maxtor 53073H6, ATA DISK drive
hdb: 6x DVD-ROM, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdc: MATSHITA CD-R CW-7582, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe

ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: Maxtor 53073H6, 29311MB w/2048kB Cache, CHS=3970/240/63, UDMA
-=-=-snip-=-=-

then ill start getting these in the kernel messages....

ide-scsi: hdb: unsupported command in request queue (0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40 (hdb), sector 64
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=03:40, iso_blknum=16, block=32

any clue anyone? i could use some help on this bad boy...

thanks!
