[PLUG] vim: restart where left off

hey,
so updating vim on RH 6.2 wasn't fun. RedHat, similar to micro$oft,
decides to leave 5.6 as the last version installable by RH 6.2 and the
build 3 of the RPM system. 5.7 and 6.0 (developer) are only available
as RPM build 4 so they require RH 7.0 - since the RPM system may only
be updated with RPMs itself, but the --update flag seems not to work.

anyway, this is not the question i wish to ask... when i had the RPM
5.6 version, vim would store in viminfo the location of the cursor
when it exists per file and so reopening a file would place the cursor
right where you left off. i now have tarball 5.7 and 6.0 installed and
i tried literally every option, but i cannot get this setting back...
anyone with a clue?
