Slack really knows how to stay out of your way and let you do GNU/Linux except when you want it. http://www.slackaware.com/ One person, Patrick, is responsible for the distro, so it is remarkably consistent and stable. With Slack, you have no one to blame for system cruft except yourself, but at least it's all in /usr/local/*. You can floss, brush, rinse and spit every few months to make things sparkly again. (Don't forget to put those commands in cron yourself, though.) Good luck.
