Actually I have to Linux systems, one desktop with Redhat 7.0 (no winmodem
attached) and the laptop using a card modem that is not a winmodem either.

first question: is it a winmodem?  If yes, you can't much use it (check out
search results for linmodems and see if your type is supported)... if no,
what kind is it?  What are you trying to use to connect, and is there any
feedback that you get in logs or anything that could give an indication as
to what's up?
