It is - I have one, and mine works fine. Altho I'm using kernel 2.2.18.

If you have a problem with the "minor number", tho, I would check the perms
on the /dev/usbscanner entry.

I use /dev/usb/scanner0 (not the /dev/usbscanner, like the example shows),
and mine looks like this:

crw-rw----    1 root     root     180,  48 Sep 27  2000 scanner0

[root@minas-aran usb]# scanimage -L
device `epson:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a Epson Perfection636 flatbed scanner
