As a recent purchaser of VMware, I'm facing this too. I use Suse, which has
some documantation specific to how to compile the kernel on its website which
may be of some help. I know that VMware likes certain things to be loaded as
modules-- not compiled directly into the kernel, so you may want to check
VMware's site about that.

also, is yours a purchased copy? If so, they do e-mail support on an "ongoing"
basis, according to the rep I spoke to.

Hope this helps.
