RE: [PLUG] what the hell is my computer doing?

You could try switching to a virtual terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1 if you are in
X) and looking at the paging information by hitting <SHIFT>-<SCROLL_LOCK>
and <CTRL>-<SCROLL_LOCK>
