this is true for kernels < 2.2.16 (or so) and it's a problem i've seen.
Booting from the drive is not the problem, getting lilo to write to the MBR
of hde seems to be. i don't see a command to force it write to the MBR of
any particular drive. :(

I seem to recall from the Mandrake mailing lists that you need to pass
parameters to kernel during boot (at the "lilo>" prompt, letting it know
to
use hde. At least, that's my vague recollection from others, who wanted
to
boot from Ultra/66 cards.

Something about telling it hde uses .. whatever .. IO ports that it
uses.
