You didn't mention which browsers you're using. Could it be a case of MSIE 5 or 6 versus Netscape 4? NS4 is known for displaying a question mark when it doesn't understand the input character. One example of this would be the ?smart quotes? that don't look too ?smart? on a non-Microsoft platform.
