I believe there is a util that comes with nautilus to clean it out. I saw something on Ximian's site. It had something to do with nautilus spawning too many instances of it's self and slowing down the box. Sorry I can't remember what it was. On my RH 7.2 box I believe that the window manager is chosen by ~/.gnome/default.wm.
