your choice of window manager. So with Apple using BSD and free

Apple hardware is all proprietary, and manufacture is controlled by one company - Apple. There aren't even any licensed clone system manufacturers anymore; Apple declined to renew the licensing deals.

So by using Apple you are in no way "free from a standard controlled by a
single entity", as the main hardware (and accompanying firmware, I believe)
can only be built by/purchased from Apple.

Is there any truth to the rumor that OS x lets you run native OS X programs, older Mac programs in "classic" mode, Window programs in classic mode with the virtual windows emulator, and unix programs due to the BSD "chassis"?
