[PLUG] posting to this list from unsubscribed addresses

There have been a lot of posts to this list that have been held in the
queue because they were sent from an unsubscribed address, requiring
moderator attention lately. About half are spam, and about half are
legitimate posts from people who are subscribed, but sending from an
unsubscribed address.

So if you email the plug list, and get a bounce message like this:

----- Forwarded message from plug-admin@lists.phillylinux.org -----

From: plug-admin@lists.phillylinux.org
Subject: Mail sent to PLUG

Your mail to 'PLUG' with the subject:

    <Your Subject>

Is being held until the list moderator can review it for approval.

The reason it is being held:

Only approved posters may post without moderator approval.

Either the message will get posted to the list, or you will receive
notification of the moderator's decision.

----- End forwarded message -----

..you have just annoyed myself and/or Bill Jonas.

The following unsubscribed addresses have done this at leat 5 times
times since May 21 2001:

     22 leroy@arthur.nothinbut.net
     20 root@arthur.nothinbut.net
     15 stephanie.key@etransmail2.com
     11 lisat@etransmail2.com
      9 root@dpagin.net
      9 novalis@dca.net
      7 pmcmichael@faxbureau.com
      7 displague@klingon.active.net
      6 fintler@halfbug.com
      5 postmaster@actionaids.org
      5 mailer-daemon@iss.dccc.edu
      5 leroy@jesus-is.org

Left column is the number of posts which required moderator attention.
There are currently 360 people subscribed to this list.

There are 3 ways I have dealt with this:

1) Deny the message, and explain to the sender that they need to post to
the list from a subscribed address, and how to subscribe from an additional
address without recieving every message from the list twice.

2) Accept the message and do nothing, hoping it will go away (this is by
far the easiest).

3) Accept the message and subscribe the person from the address they just
sent from, causing further messages from them to not require my attention.
This would most likely cause the sender to recieve each plug post multiple
times.

I have tried the first two for extended periods of time (BJ and I have
been doing this for 2 years).

The first two did not work. I am going to start doing the third. While it
will probably be siginificantly annoying to some users who have been
posting from an unsubscribed address, because they will start getting
multiple copies of every post, I do not care, because each time they have
been posting they have been getting this bounce message explaining that
they posted from the wrong address.

What you need to do:

IF YOU GET THESE BOUNCE MESSAGES:
1) Go to http://lists.PhillyLinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
2) Go to the part of the page that says "Subscribing to PLUG"
3) Enter your email address
4) Pick a password and enter it twice
5) Click "subscribe"
6) You will then recieve a confirmation request email from
   plug-request@lists.phillylinux.org. Reply to it.
7) Go back to http://lists.PhillyLinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
8) Enter your email address at the bottom of the page near the "Edit
   Options" button.
9) Click the "Edit Options" button.
10) Under "Disable mail delivery" click the "On" checkbox.
11) Enter the password you selected in step 4 in the "Password" field.
13) Click "Submit my changes".

IF YOU ARE GETTING MULTIPLE COPIES OF EACH PLUG MESSAGE
1) Each copy will be sent to a different email address. Figure out which
address it's sending to that you are not sending mail from.
2) Go to http://lists.PhillyLinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
3) Enter the email address that you are NOT sending email from at the
bottom of the page near the "Edit Options" button.
4) Click the "Edit Options" button.
5) Click "Email My Password To Me"
6) Read your password in the email you get from
   plug-admin@lists.phillylinux.org
6) Go back to http://lists.PhillyLinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
7) Enter the email address that you are NOT sending email from at the
bottom of the page near the "Edit Options" button.
8) Click the "Edit Options" button.
9) Under "Unsubscribing from PLUG", enter your password.
10) Click "Unsubscribe".

WARNING: If you unsubscribe the address that you are posting from, I WILL
RESUBSCRIBE IT.

If you cannot handle these excrutiatingly detailed directions, I am
unlikely to be pleasant toward you.
