I used to have a problem with freezing when my NIC was enabled, usually when trying to play my Combat Flight Simulator. Updating the driver for the NIC took care of the problem. However, since you are using different OSes and seeing the same problem, maybe it is a resource conflict. Maybe an onboard device conflicting with an add-on device.
