esd is the sound daemon that Gnome likes to use. What I have found is that
sometimes the daemon does not start correctly. When Gnome tries to feed it
a sound event the entire system will lock solid to the point where you can
only hit the power button and pray the system comes back safely.

What research I have had the time to do didn't turn up much except some
possible conflicts with ALSA that appear to have been resolved so I am not
sure what could be causing the problem.
