See if you get sound as root, if so you may want to check the permissions on the sound devices in the /dev directory. (/dev/mixer, /dev/dsp)

I have a soundblaster live card in a linux box running mandrake 7.1.  I
tried using oss sound drivers, and now I can listen to CDs, but I can't
listen to mp3s or get sound on games.  Any suggestions?
