RFC 822[1] permits all characters except control characters, space characters,
and the characters ()<>[]@,;:\" in the local part of an email address
(on the left of the @).

so, yes, spaces are not "legal".

RFC 822 does not prevent lusers from misconfiguring their MUAs, though.
