One subtlety that our beloved IRS does (that's not so subtle) is that they chop off about 1/3 for taxes. Chopping off 1/3 takes into account federal, Soc. Security, and state taxes and is a good guestimate if you want to help figure out take-home, as opposed to gross salary.
