Re: [PLUG] Dead, unrecoverable Hard drive?

John Lavin:

Should I write off my data?

Unless you can get it back up and running enough to copy the data to some other drive or alternatively to a cd/tape setup, it's probably gone for good.

Experiences like this lead me to believe in backup, backup, backup at least for data, since it's easier and less stressful to restore from a reliable backup than to have to create a lot of data of any kind.

Before you give up, see if you can later get the silly thing to boot up. If you can, quickly copy whatever you can copy without errors to anything, even the harddrive the 80gig Maxtor replaced, and be happy with that. Return the Maxtor for a new one, and hope that Maxtor isn't making duds.
