Well, you don't have to upgrade the ram, but you should if you want to do anything graphical. If you are just using it as a router or a small test web/ftp/smb server, then there is no need. beyond that, check out http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genpage2.cgi?pagename=hcl the red hat compatability list.
