Well, you don't have to upgrade the ram, but you should if you want to do
anything graphical.  If you are just using it as a router or a small test
web/ftp/smb server, then there is no need.

beyond that, check out

the red hat compatability list.  Should give you an idea of where to start.
It also tells you the kernel module to use for the device.
