I'd recommend Libranet. The installer is a very easy, menu-driven deal (tho' not graphical) and the hardware autodetection is great. Their tool, Adminmenu, gives you a gui interface for changing network configs, adding users, package management, and even kernel recompiles. I recompiled my kernel for my Athlon right after install, just to see whether it would work--it did. Point-n-click kernel recompiles...what will they think of next? Not knowing anyone else who ran it, I downloaded the 2.0 "essentials" .iso. That's still available or you can buy the new 2.7 version which likely has some worthwile improvements. You also wouldn't have to install openoffice and other such things. BTW, openoffice is now apt-gettable, from the fine folk here: http://www.linux-debian.de/openoffice/ Greg Helledy --------------------------------------------- Ok. I'm going to try debian on an athlon desktop and see how it goes before committing to my laptop. Which distro is recommended? Vanilla debian, lycoris, xandros? I tried my old copy of progeny, but it fails very ungracefully. thanks -- Privileged/Confidential information may be contained in this message.
