Digging through MD scripts is like torture. Connection sharing actually starts a firewall (ipfilter or iptables depending on what it finds) and squid (a proxy server). Are you going to be using this laptop as a proxy server? Otherwise, you really are looking for Samba for file sharing. First try just restarting the network in the control center. It would probably be easier just to reinstall, but if you go into the control center and uncheck squid and your firewall starting at boot, then manually update the eth0 and network config files in /etc/..., you should be able to get a connection. Then you can fiddle with the firewall and should be able to get it to work.
