[PLUG] Gentoo devfs && cd record

In Grub's menu.lst I have the following entry...

title=GentooXFS
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/Gentoo.bzImage-2.4.19.v100 root=/dev/hdb4 vga=0xa cdrom=ide-scsi

...in /dev, using 2.4.19's devfs, I have the following...

(michael@bevilacqua)~ ls -al /dev/cdrom
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           13 Dec  8 15:16 /dev/cdrom -> cdroms/cdrom0
(michael@bevilacqua)~ ls -al /dev/cdroms/cdrom0
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           34 Dec 31  1969 /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -> ../scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

...I have ide-scsi compiled as a module and SCSI Support/SCSI CDRom
staticly built-in. There is also no IDE CDRom support enabled in this
kernel as per a Google search recommendation.

I can mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom without a problem, but cdrecord
(xcdroast) says there is no cd in the read device.

What am I missing?
