Re: [PLUG] Server Recommendation

If you are using the system for development it sounds like a workstation. On yhe other hand if you are using the system for a file server used by several members then the recomendation would include something like:

Case: Super Micro SC801-A or SC801-AX
Mother Board: ASUS with Dual processor
Raid Controler: Mylex SCSI RAID Controler
Hard Drives: IBM or Maxtor Atlas V Scsi Hard Drived
* Maxtor Atlas^(TM) SCSI drives will carry with a
Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.

And all of the other components

I Especially like the 5 year warranty on the HD's

Here is the original question:

We are setting up a linux development server here @ my office, basically being used internally for developing our web-based apps, so mostly it will be running mysql / postgresql, php, perl, apache and sendmail. Does anyone have any hardware recommendations or a nice barebones kit I can pick up? Thanks

And I still say that a workstation-level motherboard cannot accept
ECC RAM. (Yes, it costs more, and yes, you don't *have* to use it,
but the pain that comes from NOT being able to use it and wanting or
needing it is unfixable.

My wife's computer can use ECC RAM. I built the PC with a regular DFI mobo. I don't remember if I put ECC RAM in or not. According to Crucial ECC RAM slows things downs (very) slightly and you only need it for intensive server use.

If you've got a system where you need none of the assurances
provided by redundant power supplies, UPS, ECC RAM, and RAIDed disk,
then it's not a server in my book. :^>

I used to think that way. Now I think of a server in terms of services based on software. Of course, a better server is made with better hardware.

Sure, until you run out of externally-accessible PCI slots in that
bargain-basement case, and have to replace it too.

With a generic case and a full-size ATX mobo I have more PCI slots than I will ever need.
