[PLUG] Component Level

I know there is a least one electronics person on this list. Could you tell me what a NEC K2983 is? It's "Q4" on a motherboard and it's visibly burned out. I forget what the package style is called, but it looks like a voltage regulator with three pins. One pin is clipped, one goes to ground, and the other goes...somewhere. The part is up in the corner near the CPU and memory, closer to the memory.
