Re: [PLUG] directory conventions

The way I did it was to creat a group called family.

then create a directory /home/family owned by root with group family
then you can edit /etc/group and add the users that you want to have read and write access to the family directory. Of course you can create a directory and group that limits access only to certain members of the family. For instance, parents might have a directory that contains the gnucash xml files and other things that you don't want everyone in the family to see.

This will add a level of security while allowing only certain members read and write permissions. Also using different owner and group combinations you can allow certain members to have read/write access while others can only read the contents.

This is a little more complex than what you expected, but gives a level of security a little higher than windows offers.

This isn''t a technical question per se; I know how to create a directory and set permissions. Rather, I am trying to find out if there are naming conventions and conventions as to where to locate such a directory.
