Both Dells that I have use a NVIDIA card, and X didn't work for me either.
 NVIDIA has drivers for their cards at their site:

If you aren't using a stock kernel you'll need to compile your own using
the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm at the end of the page.  Their
instrutions to do this are in their pdf on the page.  I also have more
