Okay, I misread what you wrote, and understood you to be suggesting
that one put a drive only as *slave*, with no master, on an IDE bus.

I think we can probably agree that that can't work.

However, I still say that there's no problem having IDE drives on a
primary IDE bus and booting off of a SCSI device. I know this
because *I* do it all the time. If you BIOS is too dumb or too old
for a "SCSI" there should be a "peripheral" setting or something
similar.

If only attaching things to the secondary IDE means that your SCSI
bus comes up next in the boot order, it's just because the secondary
IDE bus is lower in your boot chain than SCSI.
